"Monroe County Pioneer is Dead"
"Phillip La Bo, 83 years old, Civil war veteran, who served in Company C, 5th Michigan Cavalry, Custer brigade, died at his home in Newport Wednesday afternoon. Mr. La Bo was born in a log house three miles north of Monroe in Frenchtown, August 15, 1839, and had lived in Monroe county all his life time. He followed the occupation of farming up to about 12 years ago when he retired and moved to the village of Newport. He served all during the Civil war and was a member on the Joseph R. Smith post, Grand Army of the Republic, of Monroe. He leaves a wife and the following children: Joel A. La Bo, River Rouge; Louis P. of Newport; Andrew W. of Toledo; Samuel N. of San Francisco, California; Mrs. Josie Gaynier, Mrs. Clarence Miller, both of Toledo; Mrs. Martin Meinhoeffer, of Monroe; Sebastian D. of Toledo; Mrs. Walter Daschner, of Wyandotte, and Edmund G. of Rockwood. He also leaves 16 grandchildren and five great grand children. The funeral will be held at the residence Saturday afternoon at one o'clock and the remains will be brought to Monroe for burial in Woodland cemetery. The members of Joseph R. Smith Post, G. A. R. will attend funeral."
